If our society is going to act on the existential threats posed by the climate and ecological emergency, we have to be able to talk about them. But we all know how hard that can be. It takes courage, empathy, persistence and planning. First impressions count, and pitfalls can open up at any time.
This Autumn we explore strategies for successfully initiating discussion of environmental breakdown with peers and colleagues.
This is the second of two workshops, which will consider meetings and similar group conversations in the workplace. In the previous workshop (on 15 October) we focus on one-to-one conversations.
It can be daunting speaking about environmental breakdown at work but finding allies among colleagues is often a critical first step to taking meaningful action on climate adaptation. Developing and practising the skills that enable us to have success conversations are essential for raising the profile and making practical progress. In large meetings and public settings speaking out can feel personally and professionally costly. This session will include consideration of:
- breaking with mainstream organisational culture
- dealing with denial in audiences
- being stranded in the 'too difficult' or 'too expensive' box
- risks not being seen as immediate, local or business relevant
- lack of connection of risk to core business deliverables
- problems that seem bigger than the organisational boundaries
- challenging paradigms to allow for in-depth exploration of risks
- unfamiliarity with contributing in large groups and senior meetings
- fear of career consequences.
To ensure this session is as practically valuable as possible, participants are encouraged to send scenarios from their setting in advance.
