One facet of Deep Adaptation is relinquishment, which involves letting go of certain behaviors and beliefs so that we can better adapt to the rapidly changing world in which we live. Patterns of overconsumption are part of what we will have to relinquish, especially for the more affluent. Indeed, they have created many of the social and environmental problems we face in the world today.

Having spent more than two decades exploring the practices of simple living and minimalism, I have put together a 6-week online course that creates a container for people to study this facet of adaptation more deeply. The course is called Slowing Down, and it begins on June 19.

I designed Slowing Down to help participants achieve four overarching goals:

  1. Understand the connection between today’s social and environmental challenges and people’s consumption patterns,
  2. Analyze the relationship between consumption and the anxiety, grief, and trauma many of us carry, even if only subconsciously,
  3. Evaluate how our consumption patterns connect to the stories we tell ourselves about who we are and how we fit in the world, and
  4. Craft new personal narratives less dependent on consumption that we can grow into over time and that can afford us the sense of freedom we will need to respond adaptively and commpassionately to changing circumstances.

In addition to new content made available each week, there are also discussion forums and weekly Zoom conference calls to participate in.
